A Story of Healing

Let us introduce you to Iona. Since the age of 10, Iona endured ongoing sexual abuse by a family member – just across the street from her childhood home. For years, she was manipulated, coerced and mistreated by someone who was trusted to care for her. 

Will anyone believe me? How will my parents react if I tell them? Will they still love me? For Iona, these fears – these possibilities – were crushing. Until one night, looking across the street from her bedroom window into the room where so much of the abuse had taken place, Iona found the courage to share with her mother what had happened – from that moment on healing became possible. 

With the support of her mother and after a report to local law enforcement, Iona was referred to the CARE House for investigative and supportive services. From the time she walked through the doors she was met by supportive and experienced staff who listened as she shared her experience, facilitated a fact-finding forensic interview and medical evaluation, and connected her with evidence-supported counseling and advocacy. Highly trained counselors, advocates and medical professionals collaborated with a team of local agencies (including law enforcement and child protective services) to investigate the allegations and support Iona and her family – all within a safe and nurturing environment. 

Now after healing from her trauma and with her abuser behind bars, Iona is in control of her own possibilities.

As a Children’s Advocacy Center, the CARE House of the Pee Dee’s mission is to promote help, hope and healing to child abuse victims – like Iona – and their families in a nurturing environment through supportive services and prevention.
