The Strength to Speak Up

The Strength to Speak Up

At 16, Caitlin was a typical 10th grader, focused on making the track team, counting down the days until she could get her driver’s license and filling her weekends with laughter and late-night talks with friends. With a supportive family behind her and a close bond with her stepmother, Caitlin had no way of knowing that securing a spot on the track team would demand courage no teen should be asked to find.

Late in the season, during a weekend tournament, Caitlin was sexually abused by an assistant track coach, a college student who had been trusted to help her hone her skills and grow as an athlete. Caitlin knew she needed to tell her stepmother, but the fear of what that might set in motion was overwhelming. The idea of a public trial, the whispers of her new teammates, and the fear that others would define her by what happened made her head spin. Worst of all, the thought of reliving the experience during an investigation made her stomach turn. Still, Caitlin found the strength to speak up and was connected with the CARE House.

When Caitlin arrived at the CARE House, she was welcomed by compassionate, trauma-informed professionals who helped her understand exactly what to expect, not just that day, but throughout the investigation. Trained staff listened with empathy as she shared her experience during a Forensic Interview, while law enforcement observed from another room, ensuring she only had to tell her story once. When it was time for the medical exam, Caitlin was in tears, overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty. A specially trained medical assistant sat with Caitlin and her stepmother, walking them through every step, explaining how the exam differed from a routine medical visit, and most importantly, assuring Caitlin that she had full control. Understanding that she needed time to feel ready, staff gave her the option to return later in the week. When she did, the exam took less than 30 minutes, just as it had been explained, and Caitlin was surrounded by the same supportive team in a place she trusted.

Now, with the justice process underway, Caitlin has a highly trained pediatrician prepared to testify as an expert witness, supported by documented medical findings to help the court understand the evidence. She also has peace of mind, knowing her body is healthy and any risk of infection has been treated. With a CARE House advocate by their side, her parents feel empowered and informed as they navigate the legal process. Caitlin is beginning to heal through evidence-based mental health counseling, building strength and resilience with each session. Most importantly, she no longer feels defined by what happened to her. Surrounded by a strong network of support, Caitlin is moving forward with confidence and hope.

Your generosity makes that hope possible. Because of you, children like Caitlin receive expert care, trauma-informed advocacy, and the power to define their own futures. Thank you for giving hope to children across the Pee Dee by ensuring that they have a safe, trusted place to begin healing from the trauma of abuse and neglect.
