Story of Healing

Earlier this month, we introduced you to Iona.

We shared that Iona endured years of sexual abuse beginning at the age of 10 - by a family member – just across the street from her childhood home. For much of her youth, Iona was manipulated, coerced and mistreated by someone who was trusted to care for her. Until one night, Iona found the courage to share with her mother what had been happening and everything changed. 

After a referral to the CARE House for services, Iona was met by supportive and experienced staff who listened as she shared her experience, collaborated with a team of local agencies to investigate the allegations, and connected her with evidence-supported counseling and advocacy – all within a safe and nurturing environment. 

After months of counseling and years of advocacy support, Iona’s abuser is behind bars.
